Picked up a speaker on the way home from work....

And found a surprise too!...

The serial numbers start with a "K". Is that automatically a 288-K or 291-K type? Since these measure about 13.1 ohms, would that make them 288/291-16K's?

I suppose there's no good way of telling what 'phragms are in them other than pulling the cover off, huh?

Never the less, I'm a happy boy tonight....

That is a strange looking arrangement. It isn't often that horns are aimed toward a single point. Usually they are arrayed to cover a wide area. Where did this thing come from?

BTW; 288 or 291? There are two ways that come to mind. Remove the back cover and look, or run pink noise and check with an analyzer. The 291 will not go much above 12kHz and the 288 will go out to 15kHz.

From looking at the horn mounting brackets, it looks like the array has the possibility to spread the horns outward with ease. Perhaps the horns are pointed inward in the interest of transport.

Can you use some of the newer slower "safe" paint strippers to strip the paint off the label? .......Or you may be able to scrap the paint off with flat blade screw driver with the corners rounded. I've done that in cases where somebody has painted over a machine/motor plate. If you're very careful it can be done without scraping things up. Granted the label it plastic in this case...... I think.

Nope. Horns came from Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill, hence the tacky blue color. The seller said there were about a dozen of these units up in the rafters. If you look at the backside of the unit, you'll see it's all attached to a welded frame and the MR94B's are connected with a metal strip.

I was thinking about some of the "safe" stripper stuff. I may have some time this weekend.....

Nothing special. The original Altec woofers were replaced with what we think are EV 15"ers.

Even worse, the two I got look to be fried. Both read open circuit.....

Just pop a cover off and quit teasin us.

I have to agree that the arrangement seems to defy the basic principals of "splay and array".

Usually, it's not a good thing to have the coverage patterns of horns overlap by much, i would think it even more critical with CD horns. I have to assume this was done for a valid reason, somebody please edumacate me.

Could one of our mentors please explain why these might have been set up this way?

These look to be the same ones from the set(s) that were being parted out on ebay a few weeks back. The seller had scraped the paint off of one driver during thier run, - so the seller may be able to provide that info.
